Souvenir paper handkerchiefs.Mrs S Burgess printed most of these delicate commemoratives from two addresses:
8 York Place, Buckingham Street, Strand, WC2 14 Artillery Lane, Bishopsgate, London EC. The photos have been enhanced slightly. Some of these events are probably commemorated only on this medium. The handkerchief on the right may not seem too interesting at first but reading that one of the bridesmaids is the daughter of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore, one Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, then aged 11, may make this the oldest 'Queen Mother' commemorative. |
London Air Raid October 19th 1917.
This must be the saddest of commemorative paper napkins. The air raids of the First World War were on a tiny scale compared with that which was to follow in the Second War. From the German point of view, these air raids by Zeppelin and aeroplane were very expensive both in terms of machines and pilots. The inaccurate dropping of small explosives was intended more to terrorise than cause damage. When what is described as the "last bomb dropped on London by a Zeppelin" killed 5 women and 9 children it is especially tragic that 7 of the children were brothers and sisters from one family and 3 from another.
