Children's mugs and plates.
This collecting theme is one of the largest and open-ended in ceramics. It unites with, or cuts across, most of the other themes on this website. On this page are small mugs and plates which were intended as gifts for children or have children's themes. Other items for example, a childs's plate for John Wesley will be found on the 'Religious and Social History' page.
Sunderland lustre.
A pottery mug, so it possibly could have been made in Sunderland. It has the splayed foot effect where the handle meets the mug similar to larger Sunderland Lustre mugs. There is surplus clay inside which has been glazed over and a small firing crack at the top handle joint. 68mm tall.
THE BEGGER'S PETITION
Good use of punctuation but not so good with the spelling. 65mm tall. The handle has a small area without glaze, shown in the last photo. It looks like it was touched during manufacture.

HISTORY OF OUR SAVIOUR
JESUS IN THE TEMPLE
Presumably the young figure in the centre is that of the 12 year old Jesus. Luke Ch 2 Verses 39 to 52 tell how during a visit to Jerusalem with his parents, Jesus stayed in the temple discussing and asking questions while Mary and Joseph returned to Nazareth. In the picture it looks like Jesus is preaching rather than listening which is not how some interpret this passage.
